A power supply is the unit which divides power to the different components of your computer. Each part, such as the hard drive, motherboard, cd drive etc all require power from it. For years 300 watts was adequate but recent changes in technology demand power supplies to provide up to 500 watts or greater. Some newer graphics cards require a power connector also. A good power supply will regulate spikes and fluctuations in electric currents ensuring your machine operates at peak power performance.
