A Graphics Card is the component of your pc that processes and displays images and 3d graphics in games. They come with their own RAM built in and a GPU which is like a CPU but is dedicated solely to graphics processing. Some computers can be equipped with more than one card to increase available power for games. Most modern cards now require a power connector from the PSU to operate as they have their own cooling systems built in also. There are 3 main types of graphics cards:
ON BOARD - These are integral and built into the motherboard. Whilst adequate for office apps and surfing the net, games are out of the question.
AGP - Found in older systems now, no longer being manufactured.
PCI Express - The new standard in graphics cards.
PCI Express cards are more technologically advanced than AGP and can handle the latest games with PHYSX technology and high quality pixel shaders. Prices go from affordable to crazy with new models being released constantly and a high depreciation on the value.
