The Central Processing Unit, or CPU, is essentially the Brain of your computer. This is where programs and calculations are performed. These can be the most expensive component of your system. They are rated by their speed such as 3 gigahertz, and can come as Single Core, Dual Core and Quad Core. The differences between the cores means that a dual core is essentially 2 CPU's in 1 and a Quad Core being essentially 4 CPU's in 1, although that doesn't mean a 3 gigahertz Quad Core has the power of 12 gigahertz as some advertisers will try and tell you. It does mean however, that you can run multiple programs and applications simultaneously with little to no loss of computing power. There are also Octo (8) Cores on the Mac platform. CPU's generate heat, and heat is a no no when it comes to system stability. To combat this CPU's must have a ''heatsink'' and fan unit, which spreads the heat evenly over an aluminium surface and a fan on top to draw cool air onto it. There are a wide range of cooling solutions, some even use no fan, and there are even water cooling systems available.
